Freshwater fisheries comprise the management of fishing sources (free-living fish and other water animals) in inland waters.

The management of fishing sources is comprised of:

• planning in the area of fish management,
• designation of spatial units,
• rule-making for the sustainable use of fish (and fishing),
• tasks in connection with the preservation of favorable conditions for fish and achieving good ecological conditions to date,
• fishing in commercial ponds and fish breeding,
• records of freshwater fisheries and reporting,
• training of workers who perform fishery management,
• damage and compensation due to fish perishing,
• fishery ranger service, public services,
• other, with freshwater fisheries-connected issues, and
• awarding concessions for fishery management in fishing territories,

The state can award concessions for performing fisheries management. The awarding body is the Republic of Slovenia, whose functions are in its name and on its account, and are performed by the government. Fisheries management consists of:

• programming,
• performing measures for preservation of favourable conditions of fish,
• the sustainable use of fish,
• management of prescribed records and reporting,
• training of fishermen,
• performing of supervising tasks of fishery ranger service
• performing of tasks and activities on the occasion of fish perishing, and
• other tasks important for fishing management.
