Monitoring of the Incidental Catch of Whales and Dolphins

Monitoring of the incidental catch of whales and dolphins is biological sampling which has been carried out on sea fishing areas of the Republic of Slovenia since 2007. The sampling is performed monthly on fishing vessels which hunt with pelagic trawl nets.

The data is collected by the experts from the Institute, who operate as observers on the decks of fishing vessels. The data is entered in the standardized forms and afterwards transferred to the database.

Large Porpoises in the Vicinity of a Fishing Vessel

The videotape shows a group of large porpoises (Tursiops truncatus) in the vicinity of the fishing vessel. The large porpoises were attracted by the catch of the fishing vessel, which is preparing for the loading of the catch to its deck.

Large porpoises are predators and are at fishing events frequent observers of fish loading maneuvers from the fishing nets. It can also happen that the fishing vessel, by mistake or intentionally, also catches some porpoises, or that the porpoises run into the fish catch.
