The ecology of the Common Sole (Solea solea) in the Adriatic Sea is a research
project that Slovenia has been actively involved with since 2007. The research is performed in the framework of the project
FAO AdriaMed, and it involves Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Italy, and Slovenia.
The sampling
is being performed with a research vessel, which takes samples at the sample stations with a dredge (rapido trawl).
In Slovenia
we sample in one sample station. The crew from the research vessel, the experts
from CNR ISMAR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Istituto
di Scienze Marine) from Ancona,
and the experts from the Institute cooperate with the sampling.
The
collecting of data is performed independently from commercial fishing. The data
enables:
- the
establishment of a chronological and territorial dimension of the spawn, larva,
and young and adult common soles;
- the establishment of a genetic variety of the
species;
- an assessment of population dynamics and
spawning of the species;
- the establishment of the ecology of the species
(for instance living environment and nutrition), and
- an
assessment of the fishing exploitation of the species.

The project was designed with the intention of
collecting of data on the life history and exploitation of the common sole. The data
will be the scientific basis for the management guidelines, whose goals will be
the protection of the common sole from the overexploitation.
