The assessment of the biomass of the
small pelagic fish is a research program in which Slovenia has actively taken part
since 2007. The research is carried out within the framework of the FAO AdriaMed project in cooperation with CNR ISMAR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Istituto di
Scienze Marine) from Ancona,
and with the Institute.
Sampling is carried out with a research vessel,
which once a year performs sampling by the "echosurvey" method. The
crew from the research vessel, experts of CNR ISMAR from Ancona, and experts from the Institute
cooperate in performing the sampling.
Biological material is processed on the
deck of the vessel, and the data obtained by sonar is processed at the CNR
ISMAR in Ancona.
The

The purpose of the research is collection
of the data on biomass of small pelagic fish in the north Adriatic (territorial
waters of Italy and Slovenia
and international waters). Collecting of data is carried out independently of
commercial fishing.
The
data enable establishing of the abundance indexes in time and space, and are
important in managing common fishery resources.
