The program of the research with a demersal trawl in the Mediterranean (MEDITS) is a
European program, in which Slovenia
has been actively taking part since 1995. The sampling is carried out with a
rented fishing vessel, which once a year performs standardized fishing with the
bottom trawl net at two systematically determined stations in Slovene sea.
The crew of
the vessel, experts from the Marine Biology Laboratory and Fisheries from Fano,
and experts from the Institute cooperate in the sampling.
Biological
material is processed on the deck of the vessel and in the laboratory. The data
is entered into the standardised forms and than transferred to the database. The common processing of the data is carried out on IFREMER (French
Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea).
The collecting of the data is carried out
independently of the commercial fishing activities. The data enables:
- the establishment of the species composition,
- abundance indexes
(catch per unit of the fishing
effort, biomass and density) in time and space,
- an
assessment of the impact of fishin to biodiversity,
- an
assessment of demographic structure of the populations, and
- the establishment of other biological
parameters.

The program was designed with the purpose
of establishing common research with the demersal trawl in the Mediterranean, whose Member States and third countries,
use the same fishing tools and methodology, and are taking part in the
research.
The
goal of the program is the collection of data to establish scientifically
proven proposals for preserving the stocks in the Mediterranean.
