The Assessment of By-Catch and Discards

Assessment of the by-catch and discards is a biological sampling which has been carried out on the fishing sea of the Republic of Slovenia since 2006. The sampling takes place six times per year on different fishing vessels. Each year we sample catches obtained with three types of fishing gears.

The data is collected by experts from the Institute, who operate as observers on the fishing vessels. Biological material which is intended to be kept by the fishermen, are processed on the deck of the fishing vessel, while the discard is processed in the laboratory. The data is entered on the standardized forms and then transferred to the database.

Goals

The goal of the assessment of the by-catch and discards is the collection of qualitative and quantitative data on catch, which enables the assessment of the actual catch for individual type of fishing gear.

Besides that, we are establishing the relationships between targeted and accidental species caught with specific types of fishing gears.
